An identity created at leisure for Symington's first Alentejo wines.

Context.

Symington Family Estates began operating in Portugal in the 19th century. Over the years, this British family has become one of the world's largest producers of premium Port wine, as well as one of the largest vineyard owners in the Douro Valley.

Over time, Symington also began producing high-quality wines, managing a portfolio of brands that includes Quinta do Vesúvio, Quinta do Ataíde, Altano, Chryseia and Post Scriptum.

With the acquisition of Quinta da Fonte Souto in 2017, the Symington family took its first steps towards producing wines outside the Douro region.

It was in this context that we were selected to undertake the branding process for this estate, situated in the Serra de São Mamede, a part of the Portalegre sub-region in the Alto Alentejo region. In addition to this challenge, we also created the name and design for the Quinta da Fonte Souto wines: Vinha do Souto (red), Quinta da Fonte Souto (red and white), and Florão (red and white).

Concept.

Following a process of immersion in the Symington culture, with individual interviews with the management, marketing and oenology teams, visits to Portalegre and an unforgettable tasting on site, Born developed the concept “Um Outro Vagar” (Another Wander), which conveyed the family’s serenity and confidence in producing wines of excellence with the irreproducible calm of the estate — the essence of this other Alentejo (due to its altitude, soil and climate) which results in unique wines.

“Symington has a century-old tradition of wine production in Portugal. It is, therefore, an honour and a great responsibility for us to sign the branding project for Quinta da Fonte Souto, which expands the geography of the family and the Portalegre region nationally and internationally.”
Duarte Vilaça, Born’ CEO.

Visual Identity.

The image is based on the fleur-de-lis, which alludes to floral motifs used in jewellery, architecture and engraving or printing, and also signifies something of high value.

The logo design combines three key elements: the chestnut tree (souto), the cross symbolising Symington's identity, and an aerial view of the vineyard.
